Dr. Mark Gibson, DVM, Medical Director and Practice Owner
Dr. Mark Gibson was born in a rural town near Niagara Falls, New York. In 1976, he graduated from The Agriculture College of Cornell University, and in 1980, he graduated from the Veterinary College of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. As a child, his devotion to animals developed through the love of his family pets. His former jobs included dairy farm work, assisting local veterinarians, and working in an automobile assembly plant.
He moved to Brooklyn shortly after graduating from Cornell University and worked at the Mobile Veterinary Unit before founding Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital in 1990. Dr. Gibson founded Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital as a house-call practice. He has since directed its growth into a state-of-the-art facility for medical, surgical, and dental treatment including 24-hour hospital care, ultrasound and endoscopic diagnostics, emergency medicine and critical care, and grooming.
Dr. Gibson lives in Brooklyn with his family, which includes two great dogs and two fuzzy cats. He is a former member of the executive board on the NYC Veterinary Medical Association. He is also a member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Feline Practitioners Association. In addition to general practice, his interests include diagnostic ultrasound examination of the heart and abdomen.
When Dr. Gibson is not busy at work, he likes taking long rides on his bicycle, swimming, fishing, sailing, and cooking.

Dr. Rachel Black, Veterinarian
Dr. Rachel Black graduated from Ross University in June 2006. Before working at Animal Kind, she interned at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists in Manhattan and attended a wildlife veterinary course in South Africa in August 2004.
Her inspiration derives from childhood, and she has always had a passion and love for animals. She has a doggy named Samson, a Presa Canario, who is goofy, playful, and loves people and attention. Her interests include going to the beach, being outdoors, shopping, hiking, walking with Samson, traveling, and exploring new restaurants.
Dr. Laurel Frydenborg, Veterinarian
Dr. Laurel Frydenborg graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. Prior to attending vet school, she worked in book stores and publishing and had studied comparative literature in college.
She has one doggy named Zadie, a brilliant mutt who loves to hang out at the park and stalk squirrels. Some of her hobbies include reading, writing fiction, photography, learning new languages, and traveling.
Dr. Elaine Kosik, Veterinarian
Dr. Elaine Kosik has been working at Animal Kind since 2001. She received her veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1988. The majority of her patients are dogs and cats, but she also enjoys working with other pet mammals such as ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and so on.
She lives in Park Slope with her husband and daughter. They currently have one cat, who has learned to turn on the light switches at night! When not at Animal Kind, Dr. Kosik is busy being a mom and leading her daughter's Girl Scout troop.
Dr. John Morehead, Veterinarian
Dr. John Morehead grew up in Louisiana and graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. He has lived in Brooklyn since 2000. He enjoys working in the neighborhood where he lives with his wife, 2 daughters, an ornery cat named Ms. Bug, a portly puggle named Tyson, and Dave the turtle.
When asked if there was anything else he would like to add, he stated he would like to add 20 pounds of muscle and more hair (on his head, not his ears or back).
Dr. Pratikshya Patil, Veterinarian
If you ask her parents, they will tell you that Dr. Patil has wanted to be a veterinarian all her life. At an early age, she volunteered much of her free time to animal hospitals and humane shelters, cleaning kennels and bathing dogs. At the University of Illinois, Urbana she received a BS in Animal Sciences (1999) and worked at the Wildlife Medical Center, treating everything from common tree squirrels to a majestic bald eagle. After earning her undergraduate degree, Dr. Patil took some time off from her primary passion and spent a summer as an Americorps volunteer with the Maine Conservation Corps. She spent days at a time in the Maine wilderness, stumping, building cairns, and marking difficult trails. A year later, she was on a plane to Poland, fulfilling a lifelong dream to pursue her veterinary degree. She did a portion of her veterinary schooling in Wroclaw, a beautiful city tucked into the southwest corner of Poland, and later returned to the United States to complete her training and earn her degree from Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine (2005).
Dr. Patil is also privileged to be a member of the National Veterinary Response Team, a federal group deployed in the event of a natural or man made emergency, whose aim is to help both domestic and wild animals adversely affected.
Dr, Patil is married and has a human daughter just now beginning to walk and a Rottweiler-chow mix who wants to walk too much.
Dr. Marcela Salas, Veterinarian
Dr. Marcela Salas graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's in Physical Anthropology in 1995 and from their veterinary school in 2000 with her veterinary doctorate. She worked in a couple of vet practices in New York City before finding her home at Animal Kind in 2003. Dr. Salas loves all creatures big and small and lives with a Chihuahua, a Rottweiler, and a three-legged kitty in Park Slope. She considers herself lucky to have a profession she can be passionate about.
Dr. Jodi Weiser, Veterinarian
Dr. Jodi Weiser graduated from Cornell University Veterinary College in May 2000. Prior to working at Animal Kind, she worked in Western Nassau City for five years, but she is much happier being in Brooklyn and taking care of the Park Slope pets.
Her family and her previous pets are where she draws her inspiration to work with animals. She has two cats named Baby and Sweet Pea. Baby is a 7-year-old female tabby and Sweet Pea is a 7-year-old black and white, both of which are very spoiled. Her hobbies include traveling, dancing, fitness, and attending Broadway theatre, and her special interest is internal medicine.
Dr. Michelle Werner, Veterinarian
Dr. Michelle Werner graduated from the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in June 1996. Prior to working at Animal Kind, she worked in a small practice in Staten Island for nine years.
She has saltwater fish, two lizards, two dachshunds named Corey and Shayna, and three cats, two of which are named Matilda and Frodo. Corey is a long-haired English cream who is very loving, but shy. Shayna is a very spoiled smooth silver dapple who loves people. Matilda is a fat and jolly cat, but a little slow. Frodo is a very independent domestic short hair who can be demanding.
Michelle’s hobbies include saltwater fish, horseback riding, traveling, and collecting parking tickets in the Park Slope area.
Dr. Sara Witherell, Veterinarian
Dr. Sara Witherell, DVM, DABVP (canine and feline), was born and raised in southeast Michigan and received her veterinary degree from Michigan State University in 2004. After veterinary school, she moved to New York to pursue an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview from 2004-2005. Prior to working at Animal Kind, she worked in a general practice in eastern Queens for six years. While in practice, she completed certification through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Canine and Feline Practice in 2010. Her professional interests include abdominal ultrasound and internal medicine.
She currently lives in South Park Slope, Brooklyn with a beagle mix named Lily and her cat Emma. She enjoys distance running and camping in her free time.
Dr. Richard Greene, DVM, DACVS
Dr. Richard Greene, DVM, ACVS Diplomat is a native of New York. He graduated from Colorado State University and is a board-certified surgeon with more than 40 years of experience. Dr. Greene has traveled extensively, lecturing at veterinary conferences all over the world, and he is published in several prestigious veterinary texts. Previously, Dr. Greene was a resident and staff member at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Greene sees surgical referrals on Fridays. During his free time, Dr. Greene enjoys spending time with his cats, Rafi and Bruno; gardening; sailing; and is a connoisseur of fine wines. Every summer, Dr. Greene volunteers at Sky High Hope Camp in Colorado.
Dr. Philip Pacchiana, DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr. Phillip Pacchiana, DVM, MS, DACVS, is a board-certified veterinary surgeon performing orthopedic procedures at Animal Kind through his mobile surgery company.He attended the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine and completed his general internship in medicine and surgery at Oradell Animal Hospital in New Jersey, followed by a one-year surgical internship at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center in Texas. He passed the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2003. Previously, he worked for eight years as chief of surgery and medical director of a NYC specialty hospital.
Dr. Pacchiana and his wife, Amy, and LVT since 1988, formed their mobile surgery unit and service the tri-state area performingsurgeries that require a specialist.
Dr. Pacchiana and Amy reside in Danbury, Connecticut, with their two springer spaniels, Frito and Piper.
Dr. Jonathan "Jake" Jaffe, DVM
Dr. Jaffe was born and raised in Park Slope. His passion for veterinary medicine began at Animal Kind where he started as a veterinary assistant many years ago.
Dr. Jaffe received both his bachelor's degree in animal science and veterinary degree from Cornell University. Throughout his studies, he obtained extensive experience working as a licensed veterinary technician in busy emergency and specialty hospitals including Animal Kind. His veterinary interests include preventative care, radiology and surgery. He is USDA accredited.
Dr. Jaffe lives in Brooklyn with his wife and son. He enjoys spending time with his family and being outdoors with his two rescue dogs, who were both adopted from (none other than) Animal Kind.
