Meet the Doctors
Dr. Mark Gibson, Medical Director and Practice Owner
Dr. Gibson Dr. Mark Gibson, DVM, was born in a rural town near Niagara Falls, New York. In 1976, he graduated from The Agriculture College of Cornell University and in 1980 he graduated from the Veterinary College of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. As a child, his devotion to animals developed through the love of his family pets. Dr. Gibson always worked and put himself through school while holding jobs including dairy farm work, assisting local veterinarians, and working in an automobile assembly plant, amongst other things.

He moved to Brooklyn shortly after graduating from Cornell University and worked at the Mobile Veterinary Unit before founding Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital in 1990. Dr. Gibson founded Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital as a house call practice. He has directed it's growth into a"state of the art" facility for medical, surgical and dental treatment including 24 hour hospital care, ultrasound and endoscopic diagnostics, emergency medicine and critical care, and grooming.

Dr. Gibson lives in Brooklyn with his family that includes a nutty dog and a wonderful cat. He is a former member of the executive board on the NYC Veterinary Medical Association. He is also a member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Feline Practitioners Association. In addition to general practice his interests include diagnostic ultrasound examination of the heart and abdomen.

When Dr. Gibson is not busy at work he likes taking long rides on his bicycle, fishing, sailing, and cooking.


Dr. Karen Mateyak, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. MateyakIn 1992, Dr. Karen Mateyak, DVM, was the first associate veterinarian to join Animal Kind Veterinarian Hospital. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in English from Oberlin College, she worked as a psychiatric social worker. She also worked in academic publishing until she decided to return to school to do what she had always wanted. She received her doctorate from Tuft's University School of Veterinary Medicine. Her professional interests include internal medicine and acupuncture.


Dr. Helen Spiegel, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Spiegel Dr. Helen Lee Spiegel, DVM, received her degree from the University of Illinois in 1990. She has been working at Animal Kind since the fall of 1996.

When she is not working she can be found at the park holding onto two misbehaved rat terriers, "Molly" and "Milo". Dr Spiegel enjoys working and living in Park Slope. Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital is very much a part of this "pet friendly" community.


Dr. Rebecca Stronger, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Rebecca Stronger, DVM, was born and raised in Brooklyn, and although she keeps trying, she can't seem to leave the neighborhood. Dr. Stronger graduated from Cornell University's Veterinary School in 1997 and has special interests in critical care and anesthesia.

Although she loves dogs, she understands cats better and believes that client education is as important as all the other medical stuff.



Dr. Rachel Black, Associate VeterinarianDr. Rachel Black

Dr. Rachel Black graduated from Ross University in June of 2006.  Before working at Animal Kind, she interned at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists in Manhattan and attended a wildlife veterinary course in South Africa in August of 2004.
Her inspiration derives from childhood where she has always had a passion and love for animals. She has a doggy named Samson, a Presa Canario, who is goofy, playful, loves people and attention. Her interests include going to the beach, being outdoors, shopping, hiking, walking with Samson, travelling and exploring new restaurants.


Dr. Marcela Salas, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Salas Dr. Marcela Salas was born in Colombia South America and raised in New Jersey. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, she received her Bachelor's in Physical Anthropology in 1995 and her Veterinary Doctorate in 2000. Marcela has been at Animal Kind since 1/2003. She loves all creatures great and small, and lives with a Chihuahua and a 3-legged Abyssinian here in Park Slope. Aside from working with animals, she enjoys walks in the park, motorcycle riding, traveling, scuba diving, reading and watching movies, and most recently, capoeira.


Dr. Michelle Werner, Associate VeterinarianDr. Michelle Werner
Dr. Michelle Werner graduated from the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in June of 1996. Prior to working at Animal Kind, she worked in a small practice in Staten Island for nine years.

She has saltwater fish, two lizards, two dachshunds,named Corey and Shayna, and three cats, two of which are named Matilda and Frodo. Corey is a long haired english cream who is very loving, but shy. Shayna is a very spoiled smooth silver dapple who loves people. Matilda is a fat and jolly cat, but a little slow. Frodo is a very independent domestic short hair who can be demanding.

Michelle’s hobbies include saltwater fish, horseback riding, travelling and collecting parking tickets in the Park Slope area.


Dr. Monica Murphy, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Murphy Dr. Monica Murphy, DVM, graduated from Veterinary school in Minnesota in 2001.From 2001 to 2002 she did an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Then in 2002 to 2003 she had a fellowship in special species and emergency critical care, also at the University of Pennsylvania. After working as an emergency veterinarian in Seattle, Washington from 2003 to 2004, Dr. Murphy came to work for Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital in August 2004.

Now Dr. Murphy lives in Brooklyn with her whippet, "Mia". She says Seattle is beautiful but she is happy to be in New York because she is closer to her family and friends.

Dr. Laurel FrydenborgDr. Laurel Frydenborg
Dr. Laurel Frydenborg graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005.  Prior to attending vet school, she worked in book stores and publishing and had studied comparative literature in college.

She has one doggy named Zadie, a brillant mutt who loves to hang out at the park and stalk squirrels. Some of her hobbies inlude reading, writing fiction, photography, learning new languages and traveling.


Dr. John Morehead
Dr. John Morehead graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. Prior to attending vet school, John sacked groceries, worked as a bus boy and a dishwasher and also a veterinary technician from 1989 until 1997. His love for furry creatures, especially cats and dogs, has been his inspiration. He has two animals, Bug-super mean cat and Teensy Weensy-super small dog.

When asked if there was anything else he would like to add, he stated, he would like to add twenty pounds of muscle and more hair (on his head, not his ears or back).


Dr. Pratikshya PatilDr. Patil
Dr. Patikshya Patil received her DVM from Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and also received a Bachelor’s degree of Science from the University of Illinois in Animal Sciences in 1999. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Medical Assistance Team-1, which assists animals in federally declared disaster situations.

Patikshya also spent time studying medicine in Wroclaw, Poland where she met one of the loves of her life, Passat, her German Shepherd. She spends a great deal of time trying to make her husband and Passat laugh (unsuccessfully). She enjoys the outdoors and had devoted a year to Americorps, building stone staircases and trail systems, in Maine.

Dr. Jodi WeiserDr. Jodi Weiser
Dr. Jodi Weiser graduated from Cornell University Veterinary College in May of 2000.  Prior to working at Animal Kind she worked in Western Nassau City for five years, but she is much happier being in Brooklyn and taking care of the Park Slope pets.

Her family and her previous pets are where she draws her inspiration to work with animals. She has two cats named Baby and Sweet Pea. Baby is a seven year old female tabby  and Sweet Pea is a seven year old black and white, both of which are very spoiled. Her hobbies include travelling, dancing, fitness, attending Broadway theatre and her special interest is internal medicine.
